KNUDSON—A HISTORY OF INNOVATION[cite: 13]

Started in 1915 by two partners, Knudson has continued to evolve into one of the leading innovators of the insulated glass, window and door market[cite: 13]. Beginning with a core product of weatherstrip—Knudson also accepted a variety of custom roll-forming jobs[cite: 13]. Soon, Knudson was producing other customer-driven products such as stainless steel counter edging, hangers and mop handles[cite: 13].

Seven Facilities Spanning the Country and Beyond[cite: 13]

From one manufacturing location to seven facilities worldwide including a highly capable Tooling and Design Division and Injection Molding facility, Knudson Sheet Metal is today recognized worldwide for its laser-welded air spacer and decorative products and components for the insulated glass and door industry[cite: 13].

“As a quality supplier of laser-welded air spacers, decorative muntins and molded components, Knudson understands that this relationship is something that cannot be taken lightly[cite: 13]. Over the past decades our commitment has only grown stronger.”

Precision Extruded Air Spacers

Leading the Way in Air Spacers[cite: 13]

In the mid 1960s, Knudson found a growing market in the production of air spacers for the Insulated Glass industry—and a niche was formed[cite: 13]. Eventually, Knudson exited the weatherstrip market completely and focused mainly on air spacers and related components[cite: 13].

Injection Molding Facility opened to meet growing demand[cite: 14]

In 1979, Knudson opened its full-service injection molding facility to meet customer demand[cite: 14].

“Another integral part of Knudson is our injection molding division[cite: 14]. Producing more than 1.4 million corner keys, straight connectors, screen corners, muntin keepers, contour muntin bar intersects, starburst, MPS hubs…”[cite: 14]

The First to Develop and Manufacture Laser Welded Air Spacers[cite: 14]

In 1978, true to Knudson’s innovative drive, the company became the first to bring together roll forming and laser welding[cite: 14]. Introducing the laser-welded air spacer, Knudson answered the market's call for a stronger and more durable product[cite: 14].

Stainless Steel Air Spacers[cite: 14]

In early 1989, Knudson expanded its product line to include stainless steel air spacers[cite: 14]. Because of their thermal qualities and longevity without outgassing, stainless steel is considered one of the best "warm edge" spacers in the industry[cite: 14].

“Our roll forming process incorporates the most advanced machinery in the industry[cite: 14]. In addition to aluminum, Hi-Q steel and other materials, we are able to consistently and efficiently roll form thin-gauge stainless steel…”[cite: 14]

In-house Tooling and Design to Provide Superior Solutions to Customers' Unique Manufacturing Requirements[cite: 15]

To control its own tooling requirements and improve turnaround time, cost, and quality to the customer, Knudson opened its own successful Tooling and Design Division—an integral part of Knudson's ability to design and manufacture products to provide superior solutions to customers' unique manufacturing requirements[cite: 15].

“Creating some of the strongest, most advanced air spacers begins with our raw material processing[cite: 15]. Here, anodized aluminum, painted aluminum, Hi-Q steel and stainless steel undergo an exacting slitting process…”[cite: 15]

A Growing Line of Decorative Products and Components[cite: 15]

Products have changed and adapted over the years to suit customers' changing tastes and demands[cite: 15]. And although air spacer has been Knudson’s mainstay—the company now includes a full line of exciting, innovative products for the budding decorative components market[cite: 15]. In fact, anything from decorative muntins, contour muntin bar, intersect components, MPS hubs, and related products are provided by Knudson and available in over 30 paint colors or custom-color options[cite: 15].
